How to Pack- World Mystery Trips Style

So you have finally made the decision and signed up for your very first Mystery Trip! First of all, congratulations! We are guessing you’re probably feeling quite happy, excited, curious, and probably a little bit nervous. It’s completely normal! But don’t worry, here at World Mystery Trips, we think of our trippers as our family, best friends, and community. We’ve got your back every step of the way. Which is why we know that you’re probably thinking, “how on earth do I pack for a Mystery Trip?? I should probably pack for any situation since I don’t know where I am going, right? I better pack this dress and high heels just in case I need something fancy (even though I never wear high heels).” STOP. I repeat, put down the high heels! Put back the 7 different jackets and pants you have never worn!

When I say we’ve got your back, I really mean it. When you sign up for a Mystery Trip, we will give you some clues about your trip, and this will help you decide what to pack. By no circumstances do you have to pack for any situation. We will let you know the weather of your destination, and give you recommendations for what type of clothes you will want on this trip. Without revealing too much so that you can be totally surprised at the airport, we will make sure you travel with everything you need.

Now, want to learn how to travel light and enjoy your Mystery Trip without hauling a huge, heavy suitcase through the crowded airport? Keep reading to hear some of our best tips, and experiences from past trips!

How 10 days of clothes can fit into 1 small carry-on bag

Picture this- you’ve just arrived at the airport the morning of your flight. In just a few minutes, you will meet the rest of your group who you will spend the next 7-10 days with. You walk with ease through the airport with your small backpack and carry-on size suitcase, hands free to grab a coffee to bring to the grand reveal. You start to feel all of the work stress melting off you- your mind is feeling lighter and lighter with every step. A Mystery Trip is supposed to feel good, stress-free and rejuvenating. This is why we always recommend that our trippers travel light, eliminating any possible stress factors along the way.

But how is it possible? What should I bring?

  1. Think about the clues. Listen to our packing suggestions regarding the weather and entertainment. If we tell you that you do not need a jacket, we really mean you do not need a jacket! We ask you to trust us along the entire journey of your Mystery Trip. Do you remember when I said you are now like family to us? I would never send my mother to Iceland in the middle of winter without a warm coat. Don’t worry. If you need one, I will tell you.

  2. Pick neutral colors. The best part about neutrals is that they go with anything! Mix and match, dress it up or dress it down. How you style your outfits is totally up to you, but we recommend packing clothes that can be worn in various ways.

  3. Packing Cubes. While of course you can pack perfectly fine with only a suitcase, I LOVE my packing cubes. Speaking from experience, I always start off my trip with everything packed perfectly, rolled and organized. As the week goes on, things start to mix, unravel, and well- it turns into one big pile of clothes. Packing cubes help me stay organized on my trip- but most importantly, I can SEE all of the things I packed, making it easier to do step 2 “mixing and matching”.

  4. Logical footwear. This is probably the most important part of the entire list. There is nothing worse than trying to explore a new city with blisters, a sore back, and your little toe crunched into uncomfortable shoes. Pack a pair of shoes that you can walk for miles. I can guarantee that no one is looking at your feet! Remember, this trip is for YOU! And for that, you need to be comfortable.

  5. Buy it there. Toiletries can take up a huge part of your suitcase! Skip packing shampoo, conditioner and body wash and wait until you get there! Of course you probably have this available in your hotel, but should you prefer a different type, hit up the local store nearby your hotel and buy some small bottles to last you the time you’re there. At the end of the week, throw away the empty containers! Pack only the essentials that you can’t live without- and embrace buying a bar of lavender soap from the local shop in France. You’ll probably end up buying a few more to bring home as gifts! Which brings me to my next point.

  6. Save room to shop. One of the best parts about traveling is finding the local treasures to bring back with you. Whether it’s souvenirs, clothes, or pottery, we can guarantee that you’ll want a little extra space on the way home. Keep this in mind when packing your suitcase!

Cobblestone street + heavy suitcase = broken wheel

Math is not my favorite subject, but when it comes to traveling- this is one equation that is easy to solve. What makes these European cities so charming and quaint? The cobblestone streets and narrow alleyways. What makes the wheel on my suitcase break? The cobblestone streets and narrow alleyways. It’s a love-hate relationship. However, if you pack light, it’s only a love relationship. One that allows you to slowly sip your cappuccino as you take in the way the sun shines on the terracotta apartment building. To notice the way the wind blows the fresh laundry hanging on the clothes lines of the balcony. To feel 100% calm and at ease-that everything is okay. Don’t let a broken wheel wreck your vibe!

Go on, get packing!

Whether you have already signed up for a Mystery Trip, or are still thinking about it- just know that we are here for you every step of the way. From the booking and planning, to clues and packing suggestions, we will make sure you have everything you need to fully enjoy the experience. But, want to know our #1 packing suggestion? Don’t stress. With every item you place in your suitcase, we hope you only feel pure excitement and joy as you get one step closer to your Mystery Trip. I mean, what’s the worse thing that can happen? You show up to Sweden in winter without a coat? I’m only kidding. We would never let that happen.
