New Years Traditions Around the World

As 2022 comes to an end, and we gear up for all that will come in 2023, it only felt natural to look outside of the box and see how other countries ring in the new year. Of course, we have our traditions- watching the ball drop, the big countdown to a new years kiss, maybe some special food and champagne, and gathering with the closest friends and family, but it is absolutely fascinating when you realize how different each culture celebrates the new year. Whether you need good luck, health, or riches in the new year, we’ve got you covered.

Spain: 12 grapes for good luck

All over Spain, families gather in both the plazas and their homes, ringing in the new year eating 12 grapes. To the speed of the bells, symbolizing each strike of the clock, it is believed that if you can eat all 12 grapes before the clock strikes midnight, you will have good luck and prosperity in the coming year. But don’t get ahead of yourself. It’s not as easy as you think…

Italy: Wearing red underwear

Italians wishing to conceive in 2023 ring in the new year wearing red underwear. The color red is associated with fertility, so it is worn under their clothes at their new years celebrations to enhance their chances of getting pregnant.

Denmark: Throwing old plates

Also seeking luck, in Denmark they ring in the new year getting rid of all their old plates by throwing them at the wall. It is believed that the more broken dishes you have on your doorstep, the better luck you’ll have in the new year. It sounds like the perfect way to attract luck, while getting rid of any excess aggression from the previous year.

Philippines: Serving round fruit

In the Philippines, they believe that serving round fruit represents prosperity. You’ll find apples, oranges, plums, and grapes served at the New Years Eve dinner. The round shape symbolizes coins, sure to bring fortune in the following year.

Greece: Hanging an onion outside your door

In Greece, onions are hung on doors on New Years day, as they attract growth, luck, and prosperity for the coming year. This is due to the fact that onion can sprout on their own. I wonder how the neighborhoods smell on New Years day…

Ireland: Breaking bread against the wall

The Irish ring in the new year breaking bread against the walls and doors throughout the home. This is usually a special Christmas bread, but I suppose any loaf of bread would work if you want to give it a try. This is meant to attract health and prosperity in the coming year.
